Educational and scientific activities of the department

All teachers conduct scientific research on the chosen topic. Practical aspects of learning a foreign language lies in such practical courses as “Basic language, “Workshop on speech and writing”, “Practical grammar”, “Practical phonetics”, “Special foreign language, Foreign language for academic purposes”, etc. In addition, training students of the specialty is focused on the acquisition of a second foreign language (German). Students also have the opportunity to learn Chinese.

Annually teachers of the department receive certificates of international standard. All the teachers of the department passed the Teaching Knowledge Test, developed by the Cambridge University Examination Council for teachers of English as a non-native language which is an international standard for the theoretical knowledge of a professional English teacher. Also, teachers of the department undergo advanced training on the basis of the university every year and receive certificates. Our teachers actively participate in methodological seminars at the faculty and on the basis of the university and defend their reports and projects successfully, exchange their experience. Teachers of the department are engaged in scientific works and publish scientific articles, abstracts, reports in collections of scientific works and international, republican conferences. On the basis of the university, opportunities are provided for participating in online seminars held in a foreign language.

In the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Affairs, the teaching staff regularly publishes scientific publications in COXON and in peer-reviewed journals in the Scopus database of a high rating annually and has a 4 Hirsch index for publication, there is 1 author’s certificate. In the PhD department, associate professor Bekzhanova Zh.E. participates in the grant funding competition and PhD, associate professor Sadykova S.A. 500 scientists participate in the Bolashak program. At the moment, 4 doctoral students are studying at the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies, two teachers have completed doctoral studies and are preparing for defense.

EP 6B01707 – English language and computer science is carried out jointly with two departments as foreign philology and translation studies and the department of computer science and information technology. The Department of Informatics and Information Technology has 9 candidates, 9 associate professors, 2 PhD. The scientific potential is high and the teaching staff regularly publish scientific publications in the journals of the Committee for Quality Assurance in Education and Science and Scopus, actively participates in grant funding.

At the moment, the department has 4 grant funding projects, 5 copyright certificates, 15 h-index. The teaching staff of the department conduct lessons for EP 6B01707 – English and Informatics. The following teachers teach from the Department of Informatics and Information Technologies for this EP: Erekesheva M.M. – the owner of “Uzdik okytushy 2022”; Taskalieva Zh.A. has a TOEFL certificate, certificate “Orleu”.

For merits in the educational field, teaching staff of EP 6B02302 –Interpreting and Translation,EP 7M02302 – Interpreting and Translation, EP 6B02303 – Foreign Philology, EP 7M02303 – Foreign Philology, 8D02303 – Foreign Philology were awarded the following honorary titles, diplomas, diplomas and badges:

The teaching staff of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies are winners and prize-winners of republican competitions of various levels, holders of international grants:

– Project “Network communicative culture of the future teacher is the key to the formation of digital literacy of adolescents of ” PhD, associate professor Kerimbayeva B.T., senior lecturer Sapargalieva D.D. won a grant project of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2022-2024.

– Project “Research ethics for working with human subjects in the Social Siences” (Kushkarova G.K., January-May 2022-2024);

– Doctor PhD Bekzhanova Zh.E. is engaged in research in the international project PEER Network ‘Gender, language and social inequalities in Kazakhstani textbooks’ (November 2021-November 2022, UK, South Africa)

In the 2020-2021 academic year, the Lecturer of the department Furman O.V. completed a 64-hour course “Online Teacher Training Course-Content-Based Instruction” funded by the US Embassy in Kazakhstan and the US government; 40-hour course “OPEN 2021 Professional Development for Teacher Trainers MOOC”; took part in the 24-hour seminar “Reimagining EFL Education in the post-COVID-19 ER: Creating A New Prospects for Learning”, funded by the American Consulate for International Education (Kyzylorda)

Lecturers of the department Iskindirova S.K. and Erzhanova G.A. took part in the 72-hour course “Training of experts in the evaluation of textbooks and educational and methodological complexes” with the support of the World Bank in the framework of the project “Modernization of secondary education”.

Associate Professor Kushkarova G.K. took part in the seminar of the Goethe-Institut Berlin (40 hours) – “Sprache, Landeskunde und kulturelles Lernen” (Language, regional studies and culture in education); took an active part in the language online course for advanced training “German for teachers”, organized by the Goethe-Institut in Kazakhstan from 05/11/2020 to 06/21/2020 (total 72 academic hours of advanced training). As a result of the seminars, round tables and seminars were held to exchange experience.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, teachers of the department Kuzyasova A.M., Zhetesova Zh.A., Abdigalieva Zh.S., Sadykova S.A., Turlan Zh.S., Kushchanova A.N. with the funding of the US Embassy completed online and offline courses “Media literature” from TESOL and RELO https://www.facebook.com/groups/834481146988513/permalink/1415051748931447/.

The university management creates maximum conditions for the career growth of teaching staff. Provides support in conducting webinars, courses with the participation of foreign specialists.

The management of the Department of English and German Languages has planned training under the Bolashak program for six teachers.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, with the support of the American Embassy, teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Sarkulova Zh.K., Sadykova S.A., Abdigalieva Zh.S., Turlan Zh.S., Magzymova Zh.S., Zhetesova Zh.A., Amitova A.A., Kushchanova A.N., Tolegenova G.G., Furman O.V., Tazhigulova A.K. participated in a 72-hour online course on the methodology of teaching English and the development of online teaching content with a lecturer at Indiana University, USA Graham.

Teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Bayadilova A.B. and Burankulova E.T., who entered the doctoral program, were supported by the university administration. A 50% discount was provided on tuition fees for EP 6D020500-Philology (2018-2021 yy.) According to the results of the teacher Burankulova E.T. by the end of 2022, she is going to defend her doctoral dissertation.

Teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Sadykova S.A., Bostekova A.R., Kuzyasova A.M., Turlan Zh.S., Sarkulova Zh.K. were greatly supported by the university in organizing and preparing for testing to determine the level of English TOEFL.

On October 25, 2021, the university supported the organization and holding of the methodological seminar “Scaffolding Techniques in a CBI Classroom”, organized by the order of the US Embassy by the project facilitator from KazTEA, lecturer of the department Furman O.V. The university administration also plans to provide financial support to teachers participating in the paid international English language training program CELTA.

Professional development of the teaching staff of the department is carried out in accordance with the plan of the faculty and the university in various directions in order to strengthen the scientific, pedagogical, educational and methodological levels of training of teaching staff. Various forms of professional development are provided: courses on the basis of leading universities on educational and methodological activities, internships in the best educational centers of the Republic of Kazakhstan and abroad, theoretical seminars and field profiling seminars, short-term seminars, trainings, master classes.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, the teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation introduced MOOCs in the educational process in the disciplines:

  1. Abdigalieva Zh.S. – “Theory of translation”;
  2. Yerzhanova G.A. – “Fundamentals of the theory of a foreign language”.

The introduction of MOOCs into the educational process gave students the opportunity to study the lecture material in full at any time convenient for them. During the pandemic, students could use the material and complete tasks.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, senior lecturer of the department Kuzyasova A.M. created MOOCs on the discipline “Functional stylistics of the Kazakh, Russian and English languages” https://arsu.mbook.kz/viewer/course/486.

The long-awaited series of lectures by the world-famous Professor David Marsh (Finland) at the Aktobe Regional University started on February 1, 2023. The scientist joined the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation and the Department of International Cooperation as an official employee with half the workload. On behalf of the students, we express our gratitude to Maya Aldiyarova, Zhazira Bekzhanova, Elmira Burankulova and the joint course teacher Ainur Bostekova for such a unique opportunity.

The following students are being trained as part of the double-diploma educational program at the University of Economy in Bydgoszcz (Poland):

As part of the innovative classes, the students of group 203 “English and Computer Science” completed the project work “Our University”. In the discipline “Practical English” when studying educational material on the topic ” Education. University” under the guidance of PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Study Iskindirova Saltanat Kuatovna, students studied the history of Aktobe Regional University named after K.Zhubanov, visited the University museum, interviewed PhD, Associate Professor Zhubanova Ardak Yesetovna (the granddaughter of linguist Kudaibergen Zhubanov) and learned a lot of useful information about the life and scientific activity of Kudaibergen Zhubanov. The purpose of the project work is to develop practical communication skills in English, expand vocabulary on the topic, independently acquire knowledge, enrich life experience. The project work ended with writing an essay and creating a video about our university in English.

Within the framework of the Month of Science held at the Faculty of Philology, teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation, Associate Professor A.E. Sarbasova and senior lecturer A.M. Kuzyasova, held a phonetic contest “Magic world of English sounds” on 18.04.2023 with the participation of 1-2 year students of ЕP 6B02302-Translation, 6B01707-English and Computer Science. The aim of the contest is to control and improve English pronunciation skills. The event was held in 2 rounds. The 1st round was conducted in writing, 22 students took part in phonetic dictation. Of all the students who participated in the tour, 8 students went to the 2nd round, under the terms of which students reproduced English tongue twisters and demonstrated sonnets by W. Shakespeare.

The prizes were taken by: Orynbasarova A., Bizhanov A., Utepova N., the rest of the participants were awarded certificates for active participation.

On April 24, 2023, in the frame of the Month of Science and Methodology, the head department, senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Philology E.T. Burankulova held a demonstrative lesson on the topic “Sport” (Discipline: Practical English) in the 202 group of the EP “6B01707-English and Computer Science”. All the skills and new methods were used in the lesson, the lesson was very interesting. Teachers of the department participated.

04.05.2023 G.G. Tolegenova, senior lecturer of the department “Foreign philology and translation”, held a demonstrative lesson on the theme “Sports” in the group 201, EP 6B01707 – “English and computer science”. The purpose of the lesson is to develop students’ speaking, listening, writing and reading skills. During the lesson, modern technologies and updated teaching methods were used. The demonstrative lesson was attended by teachers of the department. The lesson was informative and interesting. The purpose of the lesson has been achieved.

On April 27th, 2023, Associate professor of the department «Foreign philology and interpreting studies» Erzhanova G.A. held the demonstrative lesson on the theme «English Tenses(revision)» for students of EP 6B02302-Translation and Interpreting. The lesson was held in an interactive form and was attended by teachers of the department.

Aktobe Regional University named after K.Zhubanov traditionally holds an annual week of science, and this year 2023 the “Month of Science” is launched. During the Month of Science responsible teachers of the department held the following activities: Total Dictation  Olympiad in English, German and Chinese among the 1st-3rd year students Phonetic competition “Magic world of English sounds”  TedX Project (TedTalks)  Competition “Best Interpreter” Round Table for Graduate Students “My Scientific Research”  Research Club Competition “The Best Research Club” and ” The Researcher Student of the Year ”  Pre-defence of graduation projects and master’s theses.The following events were organised and conducted for the purpose of further development of scientific potential:  Webinar “Becoming an International Professional Language Educator” (David Marsh, Director of Innovation and External Relations, EduCluster Finland, University of Jyväskylä groups, Finland),  Research seminar for young scientists on “Inequalities in the history textbooks in Kazakhstan: research outcomes of the project” (PhD, Associate Professor Bekzhanova J.E.)  Scientific-methodical seminar “Constructive Alignment Theory in Course Design” (Furman O.V.)  Scientific-methodical seminar “Blending English language lessons” (Prof. Ugur Ada, Tokat University, Turkey).The planned activities showed the scientific potential of the students, undergraduates and teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies which can be used for the benefit of the integration of higher education and research.The Month of Science was very productive at the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies. Scientists from the department shared their research experiences with their students.  Science brings us invaluable knowledge and achievements that make our lives better and more understandable. The teaching staff of the department wishes all students and undergraduates of the programmes “Foreign Philology”, “Translation Studies” and “English and Computer Science” new achievements and of course world recognition.

On May 6, 2023, the final session of the Scaffolding Pedagogical University Development Project (PUDP) for the English language teachers took place. School and college teachers completed a 15-week training course at K. Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University. It is being administered by the Akmola Region English Language Teaches Association (ARELTA), sponsored by the US Embassy, ​​and conducted by the local trainer Olga Furman. Throughout the project, quality monitoring of the trainings was carried out. On April 15, US Embassy English Language Programs Coordinator Olga Paterova attended two sessions: Critical and Creative Thinking, Online Participation in the TESOL Conference, and Authentic English Language Resources. Olga Paterova shared information about English language programs with Aktobe teachers. The last sessions were attended by the President of ARELTA Ainagul Ismagulova. Teachers showcased their final projects – demonstrative presentations of the author’s courses. Participants noted that this project gave them confidence and motivation for further professional development. Teachers are already cascading acquired knowledge and skills in their schools.
